You Don’t Have to Have a Pinterest-Perfect Wedding to Have a Beautiful Wedding Day

Weddings

back

I think somewhere along the way, weddings got really complicated.

Maybe it was Pinterest.

Maybe it was Instagram.

Maybe it was seeing hundreds of perfectly curated wedding photos before you’ve even booked your venue.

Whatever it is, I talk to so many couples who feel this pressure to make everything perfect.

The perfect venue.

The perfect dress.

The perfect color palette.

The perfect timeline.

The perfect weather.

The perfect details.

Nobody Remembers Whether Your Napkins Matched

Okay, maybe your wedding planner remembers.

But most people don’t.

What people remember is how your wedding felt.

They remember laughing until their stomach hurt.

They remember your dad crying during the ceremony.

They remember dancing with people they hadn’t seen in years.

They remember the joy.

I’ve photographed weddings with elaborate details and weddings with almost no details at all.

The thing that makes a wedding memorable has never been the napkins.

Some of My Favorite Wedding Days Didn’t Go According to Plan

I’ve photographed ceremonies that started late.

Flower girls who refused to walk down the aisle.

Boutonnieres that broke.

Rain that showed up unexpectedly.

Veils that blew completely sideways because Wisconsin decided to be windy.

And you know what?

The couples still got married.

The guests still had fun.

The photos were still beautiful.

Sometimes the unexpected moments become the best stories.

Your Guests Aren’t Judging You

I know it can feel like everyone is paying attention to every little detail.

They’re not.

Your guests are there because they love you.

They’re excited to celebrate you.

A couple holds hands as they say their vows at their wedding at Lake Wissota Golf Course.

They don’t care if the flowers are exactly the color you imagined six months ago.

They care that you’re happy.

They care that they’re sharing the day with you.

That’s what they’ll remember.

The Most Beautiful Weddings Feel Like The Couple

One of my favorite things about photographing weddings is seeing how different every celebration is.

Some couples have huge dance parties.

Some couples have intimate ceremonies.

Some couples get married in orchards.

Some get married downtown.

Some spend months planning every detail.

Some decide halfway through planning that they just want to enjoy the experience.

There isn’t a right way to do it.

The best weddings always feel like the people getting married.

The Photos You Love Most Won’t Be The Ones You Expect

Years from now, I don’t think you’ll spend much time looking at photos of your table settings.

I think you’ll look at your grandmother smiling during the ceremony.

I think you’ll look at your partner laughing during speeches.

I think you’ll look at your friends packed onto the dance floor.

I think you’ll look at the people.

Because at the end of the day, that’s what weddings are really about.

Give Yourself Permission to Let Go

If you’re planning a wedding right now, this is your reminder that everything doesn’t have to be perfect.

You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect wedding.

You don’t need a viral wedding.

You don’t need a wedding that looks exactly like someone else’s.

You just need a wedding that feels like you.

The rest tends to fall into place.
