The Unexpected Perk of Taking Engagement Photos Before Your Wedding

June 5, 2026

Weddings

back

When couples first inquire about wedding photography, engagement photos are often one of those things they’re excited about… but also not completely sure they need.

I get it.

The wedding feels like the big thing. The thing you’ve been planning for months. The thing everyone is excited about.

An engagement session can feel like one more thing to put on the calendar.

But after photographing engagement sessions for years, I’ve noticed something interesting.

The biggest benefit usually isn’t the photos.

It’s what happens during the session itself.

Most Couples Arrive a Little Nervous

Honestly, if you’re feeling nervous about engagement photos, you’re in very good company.

I hear some version of these almost every session:

“We’re awkward.”

“We don’t know what to do.”

“My fiancĂ© hates having their picture taken.”

“We’ve never done this before.”

And every single time, I smile because that’s completely normal.

Nobody shows up already knowing what they’re doing.

That’s my job.

Somewhere Around Twenty Minutes In, Everything Changes

At the beginning of almost every engagement session, couples are thinking about the camera.

They’re wondering where to put their hands.

They’re wondering if they’re smiling weird.

They’re wondering if they’re doing everything right.

Then something happens.

Usually somebody makes a joke.

Somebody starts laughing.

One person teases the other.

And suddenly they’re not thinking about photos anymore.

They’re just spending time together.

That’s when the session starts feeling less like a photoshoot and more like a really fun date night.

The Unexpected Perk? Confidence

The thing couples don’t expect is how much confidence they leave with.

Not confidence because they learned how to pose.

Confidence because they realize they don’t need to.

They realize they’re capable of having beautiful photos without being models.

They realize being “awkward” wasn’t actually a problem.

They realize the photos aren’t really about perfect poses at all.

And that changes everything heading into the wedding day.

Wedding Day Feels Easier

One of my favorite parts about photographing weddings after an engagement session is that we’re no longer strangers.

We’ve already spent time together.

We’ve already laughed together.

You’ve already experienced what it’s like to be photographed.

You know how I work.

I know what makes you laugh.

You know that I’m not going to leave you standing there wondering what to do with your hands.

There’s a comfort level that’s already been built.

And honestly, it makes such a difference.

You Get To Slow Down Together

This might actually be my favorite part.

Wedding planning is exciting, but it can also feel like a lot.

Guest lists.

Timelines.

Venues.

Flowers.

Budgets.

Suddenly there are a hundred little decisions that need to be made.

Then an engagement session comes along and for an hour or two, none of that matters.

You get to walk around together.

Talk.

Laugh.

Hold hands.

Be excited about what’s coming.

I think couples need more of that during the engagement season.

Some Of My Favorite Photos Happen Before The Wedding

I know wedding photos are the big event.

But some of my favorite images happen during engagement sessions.

There is something really special about this season of life.

You’re not married yet.

You’re dreaming about the future.

You’re planning a wedding.

Everything feels exciting and new.

And that season deserves to be documented too.

Do You Need Engagement Photos?

Honestly?

No.

You don’t need engagement photos.

But I have never had a couple finish an engagement session and tell me they wished they hadn’t done it.

Usually it’s the opposite.

Most couples leave saying:

“That was way easier than I expected.”

Or:

“That was actually fun.”

And that’s exactly why I love them.
