One of the things I talk about with almost every couple before their wedding day is sunset.

Not because I think every wedding needs some epic, dramatic sunset photo. And definitely not because I want to pull couples away from their guests for an hour.

Actually, it’s usually the opposite.

Some of my favorite wedding photos happen during sunset because it’s often one of the only moments all day where couples finally get to slow down.

Wedding days are full in the very best way. There are hugs, happy tears, family photos, getting ready, ceremony nerves, cocktail hour, dinner, speeches, dancing, and about a thousand little moments in between. Before couples know it, the day they’ve spent months planning is flying by.

Then sunset arrives.

And for ten or fifteen minutes, everything gets quiet.

It’s Not Really About the Light

Okay, that’s a lie.

The light is pretty incredible.

Wisconsin sunsets have a way of turning ordinary fields into something magical. The light softens, colors become warmer, and everything feels a little more romantic.

But honestly, the reason I love sunset photos isn’t because of the light.

It’s because of what happens when couples step away from the celebration for a few minutes.

For the first time all day, they’re not greeting guests, checking timelines, or wondering what comes next.

They’re just together.

And that changes everything.

Some of the Most Genuine Moments Happen During Sunset

I can’t tell you how many times couples have walked out for sunset photos and immediately taken a deep breath.

Sometimes they laugh about something that happened during the ceremony.

Sometimes they’re already talking about how fast the day is going.

Sometimes they just stand there for a second and take it all in.

Those are often the moments that end up becoming favorites.

Not because they’re perfectly posed.

Not because the sunset was extraordinary.

But because they’re real.

You Don’t Need a Huge Block of Time

One thing couples are often surprised by is how little time sunset photos actually take.

Most of the time we’re talking about ten to fifteen minutes.

That’s it.

You don’t have to disappear from your reception for an hour. You don’t have to miss all the fun.

We simply step outside, enjoy a few quiet moments together, create some beautiful portraits, and then head right back to the celebration.

Honestly, some of my favorite sunset galleries have happened in less than ten minutes.

Wisconsin Wedding Venues Photograph Beautifully at Sunset

One of the reasons I love photographing weddings throughout Eau Claire and Western Wisconsin is that so many venues have incredible sunset opportunities.

Whether it’s the orchard views at Dixon’s Apple Orchard, the open countryside at Cady Acres, the peaceful scenery at Lilydale, the waterfront views at Lake Wissota Golf & Events, or the natural beauty of Oehme Oasis, every venue has its own version of golden hour.

And every sunset feels a little different.

That’s part of what makes it special.

Some of My Favorite Photos Aren’t Even Looking at the Camera

If you’ve spent any amount of time on my website, you’ve probably noticed something.

Most of my favorite images aren’t the ones where couples are standing perfectly still looking directly at the camera.

They’re laughing.

They’re walking.

They’re hugging.

They’re holding hands and talking about how crazy it is that they’re finally married.

Sunset gives couples space to simply be together, and that’s when the magic tends to happen.

Should You Make Time for Sunset Photos?

My answer is almost always yes.

Not because every wedding needs sunset photos.

Not because Pinterest says you should.

But because wedding days move incredibly fast.

And having ten quiet minutes together in the middle of all the excitement is something most couples never regret.

Years later, the photos are beautiful.

But the memory of stepping away together, taking a breath, and realizing you’re finally married might be even better.
